Start with the complete refrigerator model
Samsung changes layouts across French-door, side-by-side, top-freezer, bottom-freezer, Family Hub, and Bespoke families. A location shown in a video for one cabinet can be wrong for another. Read the manufacturer label and save every character, including the suffix after a slash when present.
Use our Samsung refrigerator model-number guide if the label is difficult to spot. Then search the model in the Home Memory Samsung library and Samsung support.
Common location 1: between or near the crisper drawers
Many Samsung French-door refrigerators place the filter low in the fresh-food compartment near the center, between or directly above the crisper drawers. The visible end may look like a short round cap with lock and unlock markings rather than a long cartridge.
Remove only bins or shelves the manual says can be removed. Do not pry a solid center panel simply because another model places its filter there.
Common location 2: an upper refrigerator corner
Other models position the water filter high in the refrigerator compartment, often behind a small cover. Look along the ceiling and upper side walls for a labeled filter door or cylindrical cartridge end.
Move food and shelves carefully for a clear view. A lamp cover, air vent, sensor, or deodorizing component is not necessarily the water filter.
Common location 3: inside a dedicated filter compartment
Some designs use a flap or cover labeled Water Filter. Open the cover using the molded tab; it should not require aggressive force. The cartridge normally rotates to unlock rather than unscrewing through multiple turns.
If the cover will not open, consult the manual instead of using a screwdriver. Broken covers and locking parts can create installation or leak problems later.
Could the filter be outside the refrigerator?
Yes. A refrigerator without an internal cartridge can be connected to an external inline filter on the water-supply tube. That filter may sit behind the refrigerator, in a nearby cabinet, under a sink, or near the household connection.
An inline filter is part of the plumbing installation rather than a universal Samsung cartridge. Identify its brand and model directly from its label before replacing it.
Does every Samsung refrigerator have a filter?
No. A model without a water dispenser or ice maker may not need a plumbed water system. Some refrigerators make ice from a refillable tank, and some installations rely on already-filtered household water.
If the manual contains no water-filter section and you cannot find a cartridge or external filter, do not order a part just because a search result says it fits Samsung.
How to recognize the filter without removing it
Look for Filter, Water Filter, lock/unlock symbols, or a cartridge code in the manual. Samsung’s common HAF-QIN and HAF-CIN filters are canister-style cartridges, while HAFCU1 has a different form. The installed end may reveal only a grip or cap.
Do not infer compatibility from color, overall length, or a similar twist-lock end. Internal keying and valve engagement differ.
How to find the official manual
Go to Samsung refrigerator support, enter the complete model code, and open the user manual or replacement guide for the market where the appliance was sold. Search the document for “water filter,” “filter replacement,” or the cartridge family.
Save the manual link with the appliance record. That gives future owners and technicians the same verified reference instead of repeating the search.
What to do before removing the cartridge
Samsung’s current instructions for HAF-QIN and HAF-CIN say to turn off the water supply. Clear food from the area, place a towel below the housing, and note the lock and unlock markings. Keep the old filter until the new verified filter has been installed and tested.
Do not begin removal until you have confirmed the replacement. An empty or damaged housing can leave the dispenser unavailable.
How location helps identify the correct filter
The location narrows the design family but does not prove the part. The complete model code is still the strongest identifier. Home Memory separates the Samsung HAF-QIN compatibility guide from the Samsung HAF-CIN compatibility guide for that reason.
What if you find the filter but it will not turn?
Confirm the water is off and pressure has been relieved as the manual directs. Grip the cartridge evenly and rotate only toward the unlock symbol. Do not use pliers, a pipe wrench, or impact force.
If the old cartridge releases but the new one will not enter, follow our Samsung filter-will-not-fit guide. A locking mechanism that did not open fully may require the old cartridge and Samsung’s specific procedure.
When to stop searching and ask Samsung
Contact Samsung support when the exact manual is unclear, the expected housing is missing, a cover appears damaged, the cartridge cannot be accessed safely, or the model code does not resolve. Send a photo of the appliance label and suspected filter area.
A technician should handle access that requires disassembling refrigerator panels or working near internal water and electrical components.
Final Verdict
The Samsung refrigerator water filter is commonly inside the fresh-food compartment near the crisper drawers or in an upper corner. But location alone is not enough to buy a replacement. Record the complete model, verify the official manual, identify the cartridge family, and only then remove the old filter.
